Traditionally babies have been born in the humble homes of the poor, leading to illness and death for many mothers and children, and leading to brain damage for some of the babies.  Mother's homes provide a safe, sanitary place in which to give birth and have the birth attended to medically, preserving the lives and health of both mother and child. Working with the community, we have built a Mother's House in Telpaneca, a community in the mountains near Somoto, and the community has staffed and furnished it. We continue to support them with donations of layettes. On one day we visited, there had already been 14 safe births that week.
